Canada de la Virgen archeological site
Professor Albert Coffee
We had a wonderful excursion to Canada de la Virgen archeological site last weekend. Professor Albert Coffee was our charismatic guide.
La Canada de ka Virgen is an archeological site 30 minutes SW of San Miguel. It was opened to the public in 2011 after 15 years of excavations.
It is a ceremonial site belonging to the Classic Period of Mesoamerican cultures and is specifically attributed to the Otomi, Toltec and Chichimeca ethnic groups.
La Canada de la Virgen was a part of a larger social organization that was linked to the Toltec political system. It is thought to have been in use between the years 550 and 1100 B.C. in what is known as the Epiclassic Period and was thought to have been abandoned about 900 years ago.
